Groundbreaking Approach to Childhood Disorders

Dr. Chris Turnpaugh

The new Brain Balance Achievement Center of Mechanicsburg has enrolled dozens of children in a 12-week, 36-session Brain Balance program that takes a non-medical approach to helping children reach their physical, social and behavioral health and academic potential. The center works with children that suffer from ADD/ADHD, dyslexia, Tourette’s syndrome, autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and more.

Director Dr. Chris Turnpaugh says the groundbreaking program seeks to correct the imbalance between the left and right hemispheres of the brain. “We believe most neuro-academic and neuro-behavioral problems stem from the same condition, Functional Disconnection Syndrome,” he explains. “Essentially, this one condition leads to myriad symptoms, depending on the area of the brain it affects. At the center, we use special testing to identify the areas of the brain affected and to understand the uniqueness and severity of each child's challenges. We want to figure out where the child lives, to understand their world and meet them there.”

Experienced instructors, including autism specialists, and therapists work together to correct the imbalance by exercising and stimulating the reduced functioning side, so that both sides may again communicate properly and carry out proper brain functioning. This is done without medication, because that would only treat the symptoms temporarily and does not fix the imbalance. Instead, Turnpaugh says that a combination of cognitive, motor and sensory exercises is used, along with a prescribed plan of nutrition, supplementation and behavioral techniques. “Most of all, we believe the brain can change,” he states.
