Kathy Benkert, president of the Central Pennsylvania Women's Insurance Group, has established a new insurance company that specializes in serving women. She says, “Many women who end up getting divorced realize that they were never the owner of the insurance policy on which they were beneficiary.”

Benkert emphasizes a woman's ownership of any policy meant to protect them as beneficiary. “Otherwise, with a 50 percent divorce rate, many middle-aged women find themselves replaced as the beneficiary by a second wife on a policy that has built a cash accumulation,” she explains.

Fifty-six percent  of new Medicare enrollees are women, and by age 85, 80 percent of Medicare recipients are women. “Also, Medicare has many free preventative screenings for women that many are not aware of,” says Benkert. “There is definitely a need to view life and Medicare insurance from a woman's perspective.
