Natural Awakenings South Central Pennsylvania

Help Kids Discover a New World

The nonprofit Fresh Air Fund has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. More than 2,000 inner-city children will visit suburban, rural and small town communities from North Carolina to Canada through their Volunteer Host Family Program this year. Host families are needed to open their hearts and homes and volunteer in the Harrisburg and South Central Pennsylvania area. Hosts love activities such as showing their Fresh Air friend the joy of riding bikes, playing outside and roasting marshmallows, for example.

Fresh Air children are boys and girls from 7 to 18 years old, that live in New York City. Children on first-time visits are 7 to 12 years old and stay for one week. Children re-invited back by host families may continue with The Fresh Air Fund through age 18 and can enjoy extended trips.  Families find hosting so rewarding that more than 65 percent of all Fresh Air children are invited to visit the same host families year after year. Through the eyes of Fresh Air children, families often rediscover the beauty of their own communities.
