Sep 27, 2013 01:08PM ● By Nancy Somera

For 65 years, family-run Brown’s Orchards & Farm Market has been growing fresh, high-quality tree fruits and other crops for the community to enjoy. The farm began as a 38-acre plot of land and roadside fruit stand in 1948, and has grown into two working farms totaling more than 200 acres, featuring family-friendly pick-your-own crop opportunities, a market, bakery, coffee bar and café, greenhouse, deli, gifts, wine shop and honey house.

The relaxing, scenic York County location makes Brown’s an ideal day trip for the entire family. This month, visitors can take part in weekend wagon rides, safely designed to transport

pickers to the pumpkin fields and apple orchards, where numerous varieties are growing on vines and hanging from branches.

Plenty of delicious items are available for purchase in the bakery and café, including freshly pressed apple cider, baked goods, signature Panini sandwiches and their famous chicken salad with grapes. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served daily, and kids eat free on Wednesday nights with each adult meal purchased. From May through the end of October, visitors can enjoy free music and entertainment at the Pavilion from 2:30 to 5 p.m., Sunday afternoons.

“We’re more than just a farm. We’re an all-encompassing, wholesome place to visit for families to shop, explore and learn,” says Stan Brown, a second-generation Brown family farmer. He also stresses the educational opportunities available at the farm, encouraging Brown’s Orchards and Farm Marketschool and youth groups to join them for a tour of the honey house to learn about working hives and an excursion to the orchards and fields to connect with the land and learn how food is grown and harvested.

Three generations of Brown growers take pride in being honest and trustworthy, and they make it a priority to practice ethical farming practices. When dealing with pest management, they take the safest precautions available. “Today, people are interested in knowing and trusting their grower,” says Brown.

Brown’s Orchards and Farm MarketAt 80 years old, Brown still works seven day a week. “I love what I do and being with the co-workers and customers,” he says. Eager after all these years to get up and work each day, he says it’s because, “I still love to see the product coming in from the field. Customers love our products, the surroundings and the warmth we express when they enter our doors.”
