Natural Awakenings South Central Pennsylvania

Super Summer Camp at Amethyst

At the Jr. Tracker Wilderness Survival Day Camp, offered from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. between August 21 and 25 by the 144-acre Amethyst Retreat Center, children and teens will get hands-on experience, learning wilderness survival skills from highly qualified instructors, while being fully immersed in nature.

“This is a very unique offering for children in the Central Pennsylvania area. There is nothing like this available,” says Karen Kovacs, president of the board of directors. “We are bringing in instructors who are trained by the Tom Brown Wilderness School. They teach survival skills to children all over the country.”

Over the course of the week, students will learn the skills of living in and with nature though games, long-term projects, hands-on exercises and demonstrations. Skills covered include friction fire, primitive shelter building, natural fiber and cordage making, nature movement and observation, tracking, stone tools, basket making, camouflage, bird language and wild edibles.

Cost is $225; Preregistration and payment required for up to 18 students from 10 to 17 years old. Light snacks are provided. Location: 44 Buffalo Creek Rd., Duncannon, PA. For more information, call Kovacs at 717 574-2654 or visit AmethystRetreatCenter.com.
