Gaining Strength - Staying Balanced Throughout Life

Jul 01, 2020 08:14PM ● By Gisele M. Siebold
Local experts encourage and motivate us to exercise and increase our strength for our own well-being throughout all stages of adulthood. Increasing our strength leads to better balance; better balance leads to standing tall and walking strong, with increased mental and physical ability. Staying balanced can lead to a vibrant life.

“Strength training is one of the three pieces of the fitness puzzle (strength training, cardio and flexibility),” says Allison Zang, MS NCPT CHES, owner and instructor at Absolute Pilates, with locations in Mechanicsburg, Camp Hill and Harrisburg. “It is important to include all parts of physical fitness. Just as important is finding a safe, effective and fun strength program that works for you. Learning proper form is key to preventing injuries. Having someone like a trainer can be helpful to guide you through this process.

“Know that a routine is not good for life,” she suggests. “Any program needs to be updated over time to challenge yourself and make progress. You can also get strength training in many forms, like equipment-based Pilates. For example, adding springs to Pilates increases strength training in each session. Just like any part of fitness, you need to find an enjoyable way to strength train that is safe for you.”

“Exercise is vital for middle and older-aged adults looking to thrive as the years pass,” explains Andrew Zang, DPT, OCS, MTC, FAAOMPT, owner of Zang Physical Therapy. “Maintaining both strength and stability are two important steps to not only avoid injury but also to maximize physical function. Too often, physical function declines as a person ages, but this does not have to be the case. By addressing these key fitness elements, with the help of a medical or fitness professional if necessary, it is possible to enjoy life as a person ages just as they did in younger years.”
