Fall Apple Picking Underway at Brown’s Orchards

More than 20 varieties of apples are ready to be picked at Brown’s Orchards pick-your-own farm in Seven Valleys, South York County. Families can pick Wednesday through Friday from 7 a.m. to noon and 4 to 8 p.m., and Saturdays from 7 a.m. to noon. Beginning September 21, pickers can opt for a hayride to transport them to the apple trees and pumpkin patch.

Brown’s Orchards owner Stan Brown offers these tips on the correct way to pick an apple: Roll the apple upwards off the branch and give a little twist so that the bud for next year’s apple remains intact. Don't shake or bend the branches, which could break the branch or make apples fall. If an apple drops, pick it up, but do not pick up apples that are already lying on the ground. Never drop or throw apples into the basket; place them in gently or they will bruise and go bad more quickly.
