Local Biological/Holistic Dentists: Meet Central PA’s Leading Practitioners

Dr. Carol Layton

As consumers become more aware that dental products and procedures affect the entire body, many are demanding that dentists treat them from a whole-body perspective. Here in Central PA, we have a growing number of dental practices that offer holistic, biological and/or mercury-free services. To help you learn more about holistic dentistry and find the services best suited to you, the people behind the practices share their philosophies on wellness and healing.

Pentti Nupponen, DMD, MAGD

The Halifax Center for Holistic and Cosmetic Dentistry is a full-service holistic dental office offering a wide range of services including digital x-rays, laser technology, white restorations, crowns and onlays, tooth implants, dentures that fit, and non-surgical gum disease therapy. The practice also specializes in the safe removal of mercury-amalgam fillings and anti-snoring and sleep apnea appliances, along with special procedures for chemically sensitive patients.

Healing Philosophy: “Our goal is to deliver dental care of the highest quality, using materials and methods that are most conducive to the overall health of the patient. We strive to produce work that is as attractive as it is functional, and we believe that the dental care provided has to relate to the entire person,” says Nupponen.

Passion: Educating patients and helping them make informed choices that will enhance their personal health and wellness and enable them to feel loved, accepted and understood.

The Colonial Dental Group is comprised of four dentists that provide a full range of general dental services and cosmetics for adults and children. The practice also includes four hygienists for preventive care and maintenance as well as the treatment of periodontal disease. A part-time orthodontist handles growth guidance, full banding and Invisalign for appropriate cases. The practice has been mercury-free since 2009. Layton joined the practice in 2010 and now provides safe mercury removal according to established biological dentistry protocol.

Healing Philosophy: “Healing begins with education, and the path to wellness is lined with positive intentions to do what is best for mind, spirit and body,” says Layton. “Our mission is to educate first, then deliver the best dental care that can be provided to those that seek our care. Healing of the body begins with a healthy mouth and teeth.”

Passion: Making a difference and helping patients change their health and their lives for the better.
