Natural Awakenings South Central Pennsylvania

August 2012 Publisher Letter

Finally, some rain. I high-tailed it outside to the porch to write this letter when the rain started, capturing one of my favorite pastimes… being outside during a mild summer shower. The fresh aroma of the slightly cooled, moist air and a mild breeze were welcome relief from recent oven-baked temperatures and a reminder for me to take a break from the stresses of my daily schedule.

Recalling childhood memories of running through the rain and splashing in puddles on the street, I kicked off my shoes, pulled off my shirt and took a stroll through the cool grass and caught some raindrops on my face and tongue. I was a little concerned about what passersby might think and then let that concern fall away as I enjoyed the soft, cool sensations and a wide, grateful grin on my face. Michele Landis shares some additional tips for connecting with nature to help reduce stress, and Clint Kelly talks about indulging our senses and childlike spirit.

If you’re anything like me, life can become so busy at times that you neglect to do needful things that are vital to taking care of yourself and your loved ones. That’s why this month’s focus on Family Wellness is important. You’ll find helpful advice here for every member of the family. We hope you’ll take time to evaluate areas where your family will benefit from improvements and take steps to ensure that everyone enjoys the best possible opportunities for staying healthy.

August is American Adventure Month, aimed to gear us up to vacation in the Americas, whether crossing the country, enjoying in-state resources or simply camping in the backyard. South Central Pennsylvanians are literally surrounded by enticing opportunities to increase our feel-good quotient with visits to nearby state and national parks, nature centers, museums, historic sites and excellent waterways. It’s never too late to head outdoors on a new adventure.

Summertime also affords us the opportunity to connect at family gatherings and in my case, watch my nieces and nephews grow up way too fast. Here’s a photo with me and my nieces Ella, Abby and Morgan at my nephew Simon’s graduation party. It’s hard to believe that another school year is starting soon and the wheels of time keep spinning. I’m grateful for the little pleasures in life, like summer rain showers, to keep me grounded in what’s most important… feeling good, living simply and laughing more. Enjoy your August!
