Warwick Middle School Students Earn Science Scholarships

A team of students from Warwick Middle School, in Lititz, won top honors at the 2012 Future City Competition of Central Pennsylvania with their project, Suspendisse. The eight students developed a prototype underwater future city located on the floor of the Gulf of Mexico. The city is powered by algae biofuels, a renewable green energy source. Each student on the winning team was awarded $10,000 in scholarships to attend The Harrisburg University of Science and Technology.

The 2012-2013 competition will begin when Central Pennsylvania middle-schoolers, along with more than 35,000 students from 1,300 schools in nearly 40 regions nationally, return to class this fall. Pre-registration is already open, giving students the opportunity to sign up early and get organized. The essay theme for the challenge is Rethink Runoff: Design Clean Solutions to Manage Stormwater Pollution. Participating students will use SimCity 4 deluxe edition software to design a virtual Future City model, incorporating their ideas, and then build a physical model using recycled materials. Sixth, seventh and eighth grade students are eligible.

The annual Future City Competition has received national attention and acclaim for its role in encouraging middle school students nationwide to develop interest in science, technology, engineering and math.
