Holly O’Connor, owner of One Good Woman, has loved the retail business since she was 6, when she created her own storefront and sold canned goods. After earning a degree in merchandising, she spent years in the industry, but the dream of a mom-and-pop shop was always on her mind.

Seventeen years ago, she followed her dream and launched One Good Woman by selling gourmet coffee from the back of her Jeep Wagoneer. “I wanted to test the market and get the lay of the land,” she explains. After two years, her customers encouraged her to open a bricks-and-mortar location, where she spent three years. Today, she operates a much larger venue, along with a significantly greater selection of specialty coffees, loose tea, fine foods and handcrafted gifts.

One Good Woman features more than 50 varieties of fresh roasted coffee made from the finest beans from around the world. “I have used the same roaster—out of Boston—for the past 17 years,” says O’Connor. “He roasts the beans on Monday and I get them Tuesday.” They are roasted in small batches to ensure quality. All of the coffees are one price, including organic and fair trade varieties.

O’Connor travels to New York a few times per year to attend wholesale shows and the International Food Show. She aims to support small businesses and find unique products. “I know what my customers like, so I choose from my heart,” she explains. The same philosophy applies to the 80 varieties of loose tea available—up from the 12 she had when the store opened.

Her “phenomenal” staff is extremely knowledgeable about every product and happily shares information with patrons. She attributes much of her success to the employees, as well as customers. “I have such wonderful, supportive customers and staff,” explains O’Connor. “They care about the business like it’s their own. I still have the same customers I did when I sold coffee out of the back of my truck—I haven’t lost one.”

She credits her husband, Joe, too, for being there for her every step of the way. “When I was playing with the idea of starting my business, my husband he said to me, ‘Like my mother always said, all it takes is one good woman, and you’re one good woman,’” recalls O’Connor. “We had our name.”
