Dr. Pentti J. Nupponen, of The Halifax Dental Center, is hosting a seminar, Beautiful Faces without Braces, about the benefits of myofunctional orthodontic services, from 9 to 11 a.m., October 11. He will explain how a majority of children have malocclusion with incorrect bites caused by bad oral habits like thumb-sucking and reversed swallowing. Myofunctional orthodontic practices focus on correcting the unwanted oral habits and redirecting the growth of the upper and lower jaws to make room for all the teeth present or still coming up.
“It takes very small and frequent force to move front teeth. If their lips and tongue forces are misdirected against the teeth, the teeth will move, often in an undesirable direction,” says Nupponen. He explains that by introducing myofunctional orthodontic practices, patients may need braces for a shorter period of time or not at all.
