Scalp Acupuncture Provides Unique Applications

Dr. Kathy Ferraro

The Center for Holistic Medicine, in Carlisle, is now offering scalp acupuncture in addition to body acupuncture. Dr. Kathy Ferraro recently took an advanced acupuncture course in scalp acupuncture in Chicago with the Helm’s Medical Institute this August.

This form of acupuncture involves needles that are applied to the scalp directly over areas of the brain that are responsible for different functions, including sensation, movement, speech and language, balance, hearing and vision. This provides another system that we can use to treat patients with a variety of neurological conditions.

Although scalp acupuncture has been used with success in treating many pain conditions, what makes this form of acupuncture unique is that it is also beneficial for the treatment of neurological conditions such as post-concussion syndrome, headaches and weakness due to brain injury and strokes.

Ferraro is encouraged by the use of this technique with children on the autism spectrum and improvements in symptoms of attention and speech apraxia. A typical course of scalp acupuncture involves 10 treatments (two or three times per week for three weeks and then decrease to one time per week for the remainder of the treatments).
