Penn State Alumni Unbeaten by Cancer

A Penn State University Cancer Institute Survivor celebration, Surviving and Thriving! will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., June 9, at the Hershey Lodge. A day full of activities includes inspirational speakers and interactive seminars featuring members of the Center Stage: Music and Art in Healthcare program, from the Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.

The keynote speaker is Tim Harner, a leukemia survivor who received a bone marrow transplant and got a second chance at life. Running was always a part of his life, but running the Boston Marathon was the number one thing on his bucket list. On the one year anniversary of being diagnosed, Tim went from hearing three words that changed his life to hearing three words that gave him a renewed sense of purpose. Instead of hearing, "You have cancer," Tim heard the words "You're running Boston." Now, Tim is training for the 2017 Boston Marathon through Team in Training, with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Penn State Medical Center’s National Cancer Survivors Day is a celebration for those that have survived, an inspiration for those recently diagnosed, a gathering of support for families and an outreach to the community. Survivors will receive an invitation if they were seen in an outpatient clinic in the Cancer Institute within the past year.

Location: 325 University Dr., Hershey, PA. Parking is free and accessible. Register at PennStateHershey.org/web/cancer. RSVP by May 22. For more information, call the Penn State Cancer Institute at 717-531-6021.
