Provisions, located in downtown Harrisburg, opened in November and is making it possible for city dwellers to experience fresh, local flavor. With respect for people, food and the planet, co-founders Adam Porter and Shaun Donovan have built their store on a foundation of core values to provide the best selection and quality of products available, partnering with local businesses and suppliers and keeping the best interest of the community in mind. “Our mission is to help our customers meet their natural living needs while making our products more accessible to a larger population through innovative and sustainable methods,” shares Porter.
Being open for business seven days a week provides ample opportunities for the staff and community to connect. Donovan says, “Stocking Provisions with local products helps to educate our community about the importance of knowing where food comes from.”
Provisions was recently approved to participate in the U.S. Department of Agriculture Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which provides assistance to low-income individuals and families and economic benefits to communities. “This aligns with our mission,” notes Porter. “We realize a large piece of the food access puzzle is how people pay for what’s in their basket.
Produce, meat, dairy, staple items, gluten-free and vegan products, as well as bulk items, including trail mix, nuts, grains and dried fruit, are available for purchase. Customers can even grind their own peanut and cashew butter. Membership in the Provisions Loyalty+ program offers added savings.
“A large portion of what we spend on goods and how they’re shipped and sold can be removed from the equation,” explains Donovan. “We aim to offer a near-zero-waste shopping experience to both leave our planet better than we found it and to drive down costs making our products more accessible.”
Fasta & Ravioli Co. pasta, from State College, Blind Spot Nut Butters, from York, Little Amps Coffee, from Harrisburg, and Second Story Cards, from Washington, D.C., are just a few of the specialty items for sale from local businesses. Beverage options, from Boxed Water is Better and Sipp Eco Beverage Co., add to Provisions’ unique inventory. WildFlower Boutique Bouquets are on sale at the store for holidays and special occasions. Online ordering is available through their partner company, Appalachian Organics, which has 10,000 specialty items in stock.
“Everything we do at Provisions goes hand-in-hand with our vision to see more consumers choosing a healthy lifestyle, resulting in more vibrant communities and a sustainable world for future generations,” enthuses Porter.
