Fresh Air Fund Shows City Kids Fresh Horizons
The nonprofit Fresh Air Fund, started in 1877, is looking for host families in central Pennsylvania to open their homes to inner-city children from 7 to 12 years old for one week this summer. Hosts can be singles, couples or families with children; they select the gender and age of the child. It’s a fine way give a child a chance to experience summer the way it’s meant to be.
Each summer, more than 2,000 children visit suburban, rural and small town communities from North Carolina to Canada through The Fresh Air Fund’s Volunteer Host Family Program. They learn the simple joys of riding bikes, playing outside and roasting marshmallows.
Children that are invited back by host families may continue with the Fresh Air Fund through age 18 and enjoy extended trips. Families find hosting so rewarding that more than 65 percent of all Fresh Air children are invited to visit the same host families year after year.
