Natural Awakenings South Central Pennsylvania

The Healthy Grocer Launches Composting Initiative

The Healthy Grocer, celebrating its 22nd anniversary in May, has partnered with Earth Spring Farms, in Carlisle. They project that about 17,000 pounds of food scraps will be saved from the garbage heap through the composting initiative annually providing nutrients to the farm’s crops. Opened in 1996 in response to the limited organic and natural products in the area, The Healthy Grocer offers area consumers a natural and organic alternative to groceries, produce and supplements.

Over the years, the store has expanded several times, growing from a 2,000-square-foot space to its current 7,000 square feet. Customers have seen a growth in products offered and educational opportunities. The Healthy Grocer has always worked to remain on the cutting edge of advancements in the natural and organic arena. Specializing in foods for those with sensitivities and specialized/restricted diets, the store caters to those that need gluten-free, low-glycemic, low-sodium, vegetarian, paleo and vegan diets.

Owner William Roche states, “As a local health food store, we take our role as a leader in the field of health seriously. We understand that our mission is contingent upon several factors, one of which is a healthy environment.”
