The Great Cloth Diaper Change 2014

In its fourth year, with more than 135 sites from 11 countries, the Great Cloth Diaper Change (GCDC), a project of the nonprofit Real Diaper Association, will attempt to break their previous year’s Guinness World Record of 8,301 cloth diapers changed simultaneously. The event’s purpose is to raise cloth diaper awareness in local communities around the world.

Holly Keich, owner of Om Baby Pregnancy & Parenting Center, is heading up the event at the Mechanicsburg Earth Day Festival this year, expecting to beat their previous record of 40 local babies "changed" into cloth in 2013. The event will take place during the Mechanicsburg Earth Day Festival at 10:30 a.m., April 26, at Caromal Colours, 13 East Main Street.

Each year, billions of disposable diapers enter landfills, where it takes hundreds of years for them to decompose, according to the Real Diaper Association. In the U.S. and Canada, nearly 90 percent of babies are diapered in disposable diapers, meaning 60,000 diapers will enter landfills during the one-minute diaper change on April 26.

“Cloth diapers have come a long way in the past several years and this event is designed to be an eye-opener and an inspiration for expecting and new parents to use cloth diapers, a more planet- and wallet-friendly alternative to disposable diapers,” says Keich.

Those preregistered will receive a giveaway bag full of goodies from local and national companies. Raffle prizes are also available to participants.
