Sleighters Furniture and Sleep Shop, in New Oxford, is a family-owned business that has been around for three generations. Founded in 1947 by Charles Sleighter and his son C. Robert Sleighter, the store is now operated by Robert’s daughter Sally and her husband, Jerry Smith. The store features bedroom, living and dining room furniture, as well as accent furnishings for the home.

Sleighters also sells a unique selection of mattresses and sleep solutions. The friendly staff is eager to educate customers about the benefits of a healthy night’s sleep. “Since we spend a third of our life sleeping, getting a good night’s sleep is one of the most important elements of a healthy lifestyle,” explains Jerry.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, approximately 70 million Americans suffer from chronic sleep problems. “Sleep deprivation contributes to so many chronic conditions and can really reduce a person’s quality of life,” says Smith. With this in mind, the staff at Sleighters has made it their mission to help their customers alleviate sleep issues. “We want you to wake up feeling rested and ready to meet the challenges of a new day,” notes Jerry.

There are many elements involved in a good night’s sleep, beginning with the mattress. “A healthy mattress offers proper support throughout the night and is made of a material that does not off-gas harmful toxins while you sleep,” says Jerry.

Sleighters offers a variety of mattress options, including organic latex, blended latex and innerspring mattresses. They also feature customizable Savvy Rest Organic mattresses. “We custom-build each mattress using six different latex firmness options,” explains Jerry. “Each three- or four-layer mattress is tailored on each side to the comfort of the person sleeping on it.”

The store also sells adjustable beds, inclined beds and an acid reflux bed base. “More than seven million Americans suffer from acid reflux, and just this one adjustment in their bed can make a huge difference,” notes Jerry.

Sleighters also carries a line of American-made cotton and bamboo sheets and organic cotton sheets and mattress pads. “We also offer a certified organic wool mattress topper and the Outlast brand products to create a temperature neutral night’s rest,” says Jerry.
