Plantar fasciitis
is a painful syndrome most felt as a sharp or stabbing pain in the heel when
taking the first steps in the morning and during prolonged standing or walking
throughout the day. The pain is caused by the inflammation of a thick band that
runs across the bottom of the foot from the heel to the toes. The pain can
alter the walking pattern and have a domino effect which leads to foot, ankle,
knee, hip or even back pain. Ignoring the pain or not seeking treatment may
result in chronic heel pain and inhibit regular activities throughout the day.
Massage therapy can help by means of techniques that stretch the plantar fascia and increase blood flow to that area and promote healing. The massage uses a combination of relaxation and stretching techniques to help reduce the tension on the thick band, which in turn decreases the pain. Massage can also help break up scar tissue that has formed so it can heal over time.
