Natural Awakenings South Central Pennsylvania

Invasive Apothecary

A new Invasive Apothecary class from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., June 3, at Horn Farm Center, will explore the creative possibilities of common invasive plants. The program, held in partnership with Eclipta Herbal, takes an intimate look at the “worst of the worst” of invasive plant species to propose viable, effective and creative solutions to the challenges presented by prolific, non-native plants.

Clinical herbalist and educator Alyssa Dennis will discuss the larger ecological roles of invasive plants, contemporary and historical human relationships with the land, and the use of invasive species as edible, medicinal and material resources. Participants will have the opportunity to taste and interact with herbal preparations made from various invasive plant species, as well as see fabric dyed with barberry root, native bee houses made from Japanese knotweed shoots and a basket made of Japanese Honeysuckle vines. Participants will receive a one-ounce bottle of invasive plant tincture.

Cost is $115. Location: 4945 Horn Rd., York. Register (required) at HornFarmCenter.org/invasive-apothecary. For more information, call Alexis Campbell at 717-757-6441, email ExecutiveDirector@HornFarmCenter.org or visit HornFarmCenter.org.
