Adaptive Yoga is For Everyone

Making yoga accessible for everyone is a yoga teacher’s goal. Providing adaptations to each pose during class to support every student’s body and where they are in their journey is key. While many teachers will share alternative postures during class and suggest the use of props when necessary, there is a need for a yoga class dedicated to using aids such as blocks, bolsters, straps or even a chair for support.

This class is usually identified by the prefix supportive or adaptive. This wording cues the student that if they have any physical challenges such as limited balance, reduced strength, injury, limited use of limbs or simply feel more comfortable with support, the class will enable them to begin their yoga journey safely.

In adaptive yoga, poses are modified to support an individual’s ability. A yoga student of any age will benefit. The practice can be done on the mat, on a chair or standing. Many times, it is a mix of each, depending on the pose and the ability of the student. This practice still provides the benefits of a traditional yoga class, challenges the body, calms the mind and provides an overall improvement in the quality of life of the student.

Adaptive yoga concentrates on increasing flexibility, balance and strength, while still incorporating breathing techniques to pair movement with breath. Just like traditional yoga, the health benefits are the same, and both work to enhance the mind-body connection.

Many traditional yoga poses such as Goddess, Warrior I and Warrior II, Boat, Chair and Tree can be experienced, and anyone can benefit. Adaptive yoga allows the student to safely move into the pose, experience what the pose does for their body and mind, and gives them the confidence to practice without the fear of injury. When considering yoga but think it may not be possible, believe that an adaptive/supportive yoga class is doable.
