Burnout is not only psychological, but also energetic. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, chronic stress is seen as a depletion and disruption of qi (vital energy), often affecting the liver, heart and kidneys, which govern emotion regulation, drive and rest.

Medical qigong, a practitioner-led energetic healing modality, uses gentle, hands-on table work along meridian pathways to help rebalance the body’s internal systems. Sessions often incorporate breathwork and vibrational sound techniques to calm the nervous system and discharge stored tension. Practitioners also offer personalized qigong “prescriptions” for clients to use at home that may include gentle movement, breathwork, mindfulness or meditation practices to support continued healing between sessions.

As a quick self-care technique, individuals might try “kidney breathing” by sitting quietly, placing the hands over the lower back and inhaling gently into that space. Then exhale with a soft “Shhhh” sound, as if quieting the body’s system, and visualize tension draining downward. While not the classical qigong sound, this is a soothing cue to calm the nervous system. Repeat for two to three minutes to help anchor, conserve and build energy.
