The Day of the Dads

"The point is not to live longer but to live better, not just to add more years to your life, but to add more life to your years." – Dr. Mark Hyman

Happy June and Happy Father’s Day to dads everywhere. This issue sheds light on the importance of holistic wellness practices with a focus on men’s health and an introduction to the groundbreaking work of Dr. Mark Hyman, as he shares in our Wise Words department how to make our health span equal our life span.

Men historically have been notorious for overlooking their health, as their focus is often on work, providing for their families or fulfilling societal expectations. I can attest from personal experience to the belief that, “If I can just tough it out a bit longer, things will get better on their own.” Perhaps that sentiment is a combination of inflated self-assurance, wishful thinking and arrogance or not wanting to be a bother by asking for help.

My first thought when my chest started squeezing several years ago with the sudden onset of an unforeseen heart attack was, “I’ll just lie down in the back seat of my car until this pain passes.” I opened the car door, sat down on the seat and only then realized that lying down was not an option. Good luck, impeccable timing, a rapid EMT response and swift medical intervention, along with an underlying healthy heart and being in good overall physical condition, contributed to my still being here today. The takeaways for me are first to continue taking care of my body and mind by eating well and staying physically fit, and second, to ask for help when I need it.

It is vital that everyone, especially men, prioritizes their own physical and emotional well-being. By adopting a holistic approach to health, we can achieve balance, vitality and longevity. That means emphasizing the importance of nutrition, exercise, stress management and emotional well-being, and understanding the underlying interconnectedness of our bodies and minds.

In this issue, you’ll find practical strategies for nutrition, stress reduction, mindfulness and cultivating emotional resilience. Remember to prioritize self-care and embrace comprehensive recommendations for maintaining health. Self-care is not selfish, but rather a foundation for supporting our loved ones and contributing positively to society.

Let’s cultivate a culture of holistic wellness together that empowers everyone to thrive in all aspects of life as we walk along the path toward feeling good, living simply and laughing more.
