Breathe, Bend and Balance Our Gut
“Yoga and meditation offer endless benefits for our digestive health, physical health and mental well-being.” — Dr. Amber Cohen
The following television reference may be too old for some readers, but I’m recalling the running quote from Lieutenant Colonel Hannibal Smith of The A-Team; “I love it when a plan comes together.” That’s how I feel this month about the theme of gut vitality coinciding with National Yoga Month.
As we step into September, it’s a perfect time to focus on the connections between the movement and mindfulness of yoga and the invisible world within our gut. Science now confirms what ancient traditions have purported since long ago—that the state of our digestive system doesn’t just affect how we process food, but also how we feel, think and even relate to the world around us.
The gut is now often referred to as the body’s “second brain”, housing trillions of microbes that influence immunity, mood and resilience. When this inner ecosystem is nurtured, it acts like a flourishing garden, bringing balance, vitality and strength. When neglected, it struggles, and we may find ourselves out of tune in both body and mind. The good news is that unlike many things in life, we do have a say in how our gut thrives.
Some of the simplest practices yield the most profound results: eating whole, fiber-rich foods, favoring fermented options that introduce beneficial bacteria, hydrating well, resting deeply and managing stress. This is where yoga gracefully enters the conversation. Breath-centered movement calms the nervous system, relieves digestive distress and creates the space for restoration. Gentle twists massage internal organs, forward folds quiet the mind and even the humble act of lying still and breathing deeply can guide the body back into harmony.
Today it is easy to overlook the small habits that sustain us, yet each bite of wholesome food, each mindful breath and each pause on the yoga mat all add up like drops of water slowly filling a well. When we align our gut health, physical vitality and mental clarity, we unlock the possibility of showing up fully for ourselves and others.
This month, as the plan to merge gut vitality with yoga comes together, I’m also paraphrasing Mr. T, the other notable member of the A-Team and his famous quote, “I pity the fools who don’t breath, bend and balance their gut.” Let’s follow that advice by cultivating balance from the inside-out as we move toward feeling good, living simply and laughing more.
